Resumen:
On the decaying planet of Pz-zazz, Nightbeat, Siren, and Hosehead are asking a crowd of mobsters if they know anything about the Creation Matrix. A brief fistfight turns into a gang shootout, but before the Autobots escape, a dying alien gives Siren a statue of a bird, saying that the fate of the world depends on it.
Nearby in space, Optimus Prime is dispatching Autobot search teams. After Primus' awakening last issue, Emirate Xaaron had contacted Optimus in hopes of retrieving the Creation Matrix from him. But the Matrix was lost, accidentally blasted into space by the Autobots when they "buried" Optimus Prime's body (in issue #26). Calculations have narrowed the search to one star system, so the Autobots are now hunting for it. Even so, Optimus has a disturbing sense that finding the Matrix will leave them worse off.
In a bar, the Autobots meet a woman named Fatale. She makes a deal with them; if the Autobots give her the bird of prey statue, she will guide them up a mountain that is reported to contain a "Font of Life." The Autobots agree, wondering if this font may be the Matrix. Shadowy figures follow Nightbeat as he goes to retrieve the statue, while a mob boss named Gutt vows to destroy the new "robot mob." Nightbeat retrieves the Bird of Prey, only to be stopped by a pack of enforcers who demand the statue. Nightbeat fights his way through, but is stopped at point-blank range by a third gunman, and is then saved when an unseen person shoots the mobster.
Siren, Hosehead, and Fatale reach the mountaintop shrine and run into Gutt and his forces. Nightbeat then arrives with a solution to the mystery -- the statue is the source of the planet's life-force, and belongs at the shrine. When it was stolen, the planet began to decay, and now everyone is seeking its power for their own gain. The Autobots stop Gutt's forces, and Fatale begs Nightbeat to give her the statue so she can remain young. Nightbeat refuses; though the Bird of Prey can also serve the Autobots in lieu of the Matrix, they cannot sacrifice the planet. Nightbeat returns the statue to the shrine, and the planet is immediately flooded with new life and vitality.
Before the Autobots can celebrate, they are ambushed by the "robot mob" -- who are Thunderwing and his Decepticons. Thunderwing does not know why the Autobots are searching this part of the galaxy, but he looks forward to extricating the information from the Autobots...
Este número es la primera parte de la saga "Matrix Quest (Tras la Matriz)". Esta historia de cinco números tuvo resultados diversos. Mientras que la búsqueda (finalmente resuelta) de la Matriz Creativa era interesante, la mayoría de los eventos notables ocurren en las dos últimas partes (números 65 y 66). Los tres primeros números parecen más como para llenar, aunque inciden el foco en algunos Autobots menos conocidos.
En la portada de este número hay una sutil broma. El libro de bolsillo "Bird of Prey (El ave de presa)" está publicado por Timely. En realidad, Timely Publishing era la compañía que después se convirtió en Marvel Comics.
Este número está basado libremente en la película "El halcón Maltés", protagonizado por Humphrey Bogart, el cual aparece dibujado en la página 2.
Un punto interesante (uniforme a lo largo de Matrix Quest) es que los seres alienígenas encontrados, los objetos, y las estructuras, todo es casi siempre del tamaño de los Transformers, es como si fuera el tamaño "normal".
